TASCHEN Coffee Table Book 'Araki: Bondage'

He has been called a genius and a poet, as well as a misogynist, a pornographer, a monster - but Nobuyoshi Araki's work transcends simple moralistic classifications. He has said of his work, "There is no conclusion. It is completely open. It's not going anywhere." Araki is one of the greatest Japanese photographers of our time, and his oeuvre is characterized by an unmistakable mastery of composition, color and tone.

Kinbaku-bi: The traditional Japanese art of erotic bondage

Kinbaku-bi, the traditional Japanese art of erotic bondage, meaning "the beauty of tight binding," has long fascinated the photographer and has become one of his main subjects. Araki plays with patterns of subjection and emancipation, death and desire, and with sliding between serene image and shock. Whether literally or figuratively, his models are certainly immobilized, but in the most tantalizing ways - girls lying bound but defiant, hanging from the ceiling, in traditional clothing or naked, facing forward, sometimes with a flower subtly placed between their legs. Araki selects his favorite images of bondage. The result is a testament to his ability to balance sexual vulnerability and seduction like no other.

Nobuyoshi Araki

Nobuyoshi Araki was born in Tokyo in 1940. At the ripe old age of twelve, Araki received a camera from his father and has been taking pictures ever since. He studied photography and film at Chiba University and went on to study commercial photography soon after graduation. In 1970, he created his famous Xeroxed Photo Albums, which he produced in limited editions and sent to friends, art critics and randomly selected people from the phone book. Over the years, his bold, unabashed photographs of his private life have been the subject of much controversy and censorship (especially in his native Japan), a fact that has neither deterred the artist nor diminished his influence. To date, Araki has published more than 400 books of his work.
