Performance art by Marina Abramović at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

Dive deep into the art experience of the renowned Marina Abramović, presented in the largest retrospective ever held in the Netherlands! More than 60 striking art pieces show the evolution of her extraordinary artistic career over the past half century: from her initial creations in former Yugoslavia and Amsterdam to the innovative performances with her partner Ulay and her current solo projects.

Psychological and physical limits
Since the 1970s, Marina Abramović has played a leading role in the world of performance art and body art, and is recognized as a crucial pioneer within these art styles. She has emancipated performance art from experimental to widely accepted. She utilizes her own body as a medium and explores both her physical and psychological resilience. Together with her partner Ulay, whom she met in Amsterdam in 1975, she garnered world fame through challenging performances in which they tested their personal limits. In her more recent solo performances, she focuses more on spirituality and interaction, with the audience playing an active role in her art and experiencing a collective energy together.

The exhibition includes photographs, videos, sculptures and live interpretations of four memorable performances presented for the first time in the Netherlands: Art Must Be Beautiful, Artist Must Be Beautiful (1975), Imponderabilia (collaboration with Ulay) (1977), Luminosity (1997) and The House with the Ocean View (2002). As a visitor, you will also have the opportunity to participate in two specific works: Work Relation (collaboration with Ulay) (1978) and Counting the Rice by the Abramović Method.
