For the press tour that followed the record-breaking release of Greta Gerwig's award-winning, acclaimed Barbie movie, producer and star Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal immersed themselves in some of Barbie's most iconic outfits and collected vintage pieces. With the idea of compiling the outfits into a photo book, Robbie and Mukamal approached designers such as Giorgio Armani and Donatella Versace, among others, to create looks inspired by the doll-sized originals.
Many of these looks were not on display because the official Barbie press tour was cut short - so Margot and Andrew teamed up with noted fashion photographer Craig McDean to photograph her in the looks exactly as they were put together: Schiaparelli in Los Angeles, Vivienne Westwood in London, vintage Chanel with matching Steamline luggage at the airport and more.
McDean's stunning photography is accompanied by original Barbie dolls from the period, a wealth of rare material from Mattel's fashion archives and sketches and polaroids by the designers. Fabien Baron, who conceived and produced the shoots and art-directed the book, turned them into evocative collages. With text by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal and handwritten contributions from the designers behind the looks (from Olivier Rousteing and Michelle Ochs to Manolo Blahnik and Jeremy Scott), this unique book combines the serious chic of haute couture with the serious fun of the Barbie world - the dolls, history and style that have captured the imagination for 65 years.
