"Fashion" is a term that stands for whatever is trending at the time. Paul Kooiker's fashion photography, on the other hand, is characterized by timelessness. The artist portrays the biggest fashion brands and most famous faces of the moment, but moves them into a world of their own. Detached from time and place, his surreal images feel like film stills with stories we can only guess at.
His photography transcends classical gender roles: his models assume unusual poses and their faces are often left out of focus, hiding their identity. Sometimes it is not even clear whether they are humans or dolls. To capture the extravagance of luxury objects, Kooiker magnifies the means of presentation, such as mannequins and displays, in such a way that it is ultimately our desire itself that is captured by his camera.
In the extraordinary coffee table book "Fashion," he attempts to express his view of fashion. This commissioned work of the same title was prominently displayed at Foam Amsterdam in 2022.
