Philip-Lorca diCorcia's coffee table book "Hustlers" is a modern masterpiece. Super-sized. Hard to come by. Highly prized. And expensive. But not to be missed by lovers of cinematic photography.

Between 1990 and 1992, Philip-Lorca diCorcia's first solo exhibition. The exhibition, titled "Strangers," was accompanied by a museum catalog. Twenty years later, Steidl published the series in its entirety.

An empathetic yet melancholy poem of the Hollywood dream gone wrong, Hustlers prescribes itself to the heavily staged pictorialism and coincidence of street casting for which diCorcia is best known.

Knowing exactly what he wanted from each photograph and fearful of police interference, diCorcia arranged all settings in advance: this motel room, that vacant lot, among cars, in a fast-food restaurant - the story was always deliberate. From the moment diCorcia approached a potential subject (usually around Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood) to the completion of shooting, rarely had more than an hour passed. The titles of these encounters reinforce the facts: Ralph Smith, 21 years old, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and $25.
