Amsterdam canal houses tells the story of four centuries of life along Amsterdam's canals. In the 17th century, these magnificent buildings were built by the wealthiest merchants and patricians. In later centuries they were inhabited by their descendants or by newcomers to the canals who cultivated them.

In more than 400 pages, the doors of these city palaces are opened. More than thirty houses are shown in all their splendor; interiors of unprecedented opulence that few have ever seen. Meet the people who live here, who have managed to restore and preserve historic interiors that are among the finest in the Netherlands.

This is the first book that the Amsterdam canal houses and their inhabitants in an artistic and characteristic manner. In over 400 pages and 350 photographs, the book showcases more than 30 majestic canal houses. Interiors of unprecedented wealth and many historical treasures. The book is published bilingually in English and Dutch.

The late Eberhard van der Laan, mayor of Amsterdam, wrote in his foreword: Enjoy the surprises offered by this unique book and let your imagination run wild when viewing Arjan Bronkhorst's beautiful photographs. His photography style is timeless and full of character and his pictures sublimely stilled. He has succeeded like no other in conveying a sense of life on the canals over the past four centuries!

Photographer Arjan Bronkhorst worked on the project for nearly two years. Some of the most impressive canal houses are included in his photographs, as well as characteristic residential houses. Some of these houses have never been published before. The residents of the houses appear in this book through intriguing portraits and personal stories.

Texts are written by Marc van den Eerenbeemt - de Volkskrant - and art historian Koos de Wilt - author of Rembrandt Inc. Introduction by Gabri van Tussenbroek - author of Amsterdam in 1597.
